about

Available here and the TEE PEE RECORDS ANNEX.

This live recording happily fills in a few gaps in the Township catalog – a live album and most songs from the never released, “Life Starts Tonight” album. It’s also a nice snapshot of this line-up firing on all cylinders. 2010 would prove to be a very rewarding, but also very trying and tumultuous year for the band, ultimately leading toward a near break-up and subsequent member shake-up. But at the beginning of the year we were still breaking in Alex, releasing a Greatest Hits through King Yum, and getting ready to undertake a 5-week tour that would go down as easily our craziest. We like to joke that we went on tour to promote an unreleased album, and that’s ultimately what we did. As best as I can surmise (it’s getting to be a while ago now), we saw this Live at Mad Oak opportunity as a chance to get down these songs with Alex on them (he wasn’t on the studio version and had added quite a bit to them), hype up the Greatest Hits album, and show to others and ourselves that we were ready to enter a new, take-no-prisoners phase. Shortly after that rather destructive March tour, Alex, John & I spent many nights working up new material while Greg was sidelined with knee and back injuries. We quickly had most or all of the songs for One More Summer and all thoughts of Life Starts Tonight, or any of our previous albums, seemed to fade in the taillights. Upon rediscovering this live set – masterfully engineered and mixed on the fly by Benny Grotto, I am touched by its seriousness. We worked exceptionally hard in 2010, and by that fall we were a force to be reckoned with (my personal highlight being the 9/10/10 Middle East Downstairs show. Look it up on YouTube!), but we were also at a serious crossroads. As stated before, by the end of that year, this chapter in Township history would be over. One could argue that it seems a shame for a band so tight and with a healthy catalog of songs and releases not to be able to work through it, but those people weren’t in the band. We gave it everything we had in that year, and the road we were heading down was one I, for one, was not interested in traveling anymore. The spirit, as it felt to me, was being corrupted by desperation and it was manifesting itself in very destructive ways – physically and emotionally. We started a new journey in 2011, and while it took some time to adjust to the new path, we never stopped writing, recording and playing. This live album feels like the perfect, exciting apex of a last chapter in the first volume of Township history. - MWP

The Family Township Boston, Massachusetts

Township, AKA The Family Township, has been making their Boston-bred brand of classic rock inspired music for nearly 2 decades. As the years and albums have progressed, Township's music has evolved, infusing itself with greater urgency, immediacy, and existential rumination; mirroring these days rather than “those days.” ... more
